Behavioral Pathway Systems has met the criteria for inclusion in the accreditation process and is included on
the Joint Commission’s list of acceptable systems. BPS is committed to meeting future criteria established by
the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Behavioral Pathway Systems has a solid
track record in ensuring the timely and accurate transmission of performance data to the Joint Commission.
We also provide comprehensive reports to client organizations so that the value of the data extends well beyond regulatory compliance. BPS works flexibly with clients to accept data in a variety of formats, obviating the need
for duplication of efforts.

The Current Status of ORYX®...Are You In Compliance?
In October of 2002, the Joint Commission modified its reporting requirements for performance measurement data
for those surveyed under the Behavioral Health Standards. Organizations were given permission to maintain and
report their own data directly to JCAHO at the time of the onsite survey, instead of reporting through a listed
system. However, according to Dr. Frank Zibrat, ORYX® Associate Director, this change has led to a great deal
of confusion within the industry. First of all, the new rule applies only to those organizations that are surveyed
under the Behavioral Health standards, not the Hospital Standards. Therefore, free-standing psychiatric hospitals
must still report their performance measurement data to JCAHO through a listed ORYX vendor. Many psychiatric
hospitals have misinterpreted the rule change and have unadvisedly dropped their ORYX vendor. These
organizations are now out of compliance with JCAHO requirements.

More so, many other behavioral health organizations that lacked the internal resources necessary to properly
carry out their own data analysis and reporting moved too quickly to terminate contracts with ORYX vendors.
As a result, numerous organizations are not creating necessary statistical control charts that meet the exacting specifications of JCAHO’s performance measurement requirements. It is important to keep in mind that
performance measurement requirements have not changed…merely how such data are reported to JCAHO.

Therefore, this is an opportune time for administrators to review carefully their adherence to the performance measurement requirements of JCAHO. For assistance in determining the status of your organization’s compliance, Behavioral Pathway Systems would be pleased to review your circumstances with you.
